Meet the Candidate
My name is Schileen Potter and I am running for the Hartnell Community College Board. As a candidate that values students and teachers first, the board trustee position should make responsible, fiscal decisions that bring 21st century education and opportunities to our students. As board trustee, one of the most important missions is to hire a visionary leader. We need a board that supports staff and faculty alike so they can focus on doing what they do best, support our students. With a mission to support our students, teachers and staff, we can turn around the college that will build the leaders of tomorrow.
As a resident in District 2, living in the Creekbridge subdivision for over 10 years, Schileen loves her community and wants to serve the residents of Salinas. Schileen served in the U.S. Army for 6 years and Ft. Ord was her first duty station and her introduction to the Salinas Valley. One of her many achievements while serving in the Army, was representing the US Army and Armed Forces Tae Kwon Do Team as an elite athlete and soldier. She was the 1994 World Military Champion for her weight class.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Schileen started her own education at a community college and understands the value of a college education. After receiving her Associates Degree in Liberal Studies, she went on to university and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies while working full time and volunteering at a local Tae Kwon Do school. Schileen has held many leadership roles over the years to include Treasurer for the Monterey County Pride. Schileen was part of a team that turned around a struggling non-profit into a success Pride organization that brought education, celebration and community events to help support the LGBT community and their allies.
In addtion to being a IT Specialist at a government agency, she is also a small business owner. Schileen understand the issues of making payroll and the hard decision that need to be made. Like many of you, Schileen and her wife Christine have watched their sons graduate from a local high school, go to Hartnell and through hard work and support, achieve their dreams of working and being members of the community.
Working together, Schileen can bring the leadership and vision to Hartnell that our students deserve. She wants to help our front-line educators because they are the boots on the ground, dedicated to helping students achieve success and build better futures for them, their families, and our community.
